Why is it called ‘The Goose’? The farm and surrounding area was given the name Ganzekraal which means ‘Goose Enclave’ over a century ago when wild geese from the area flew down during the day to rest in the cattle and sheep enclosures. They would forage on the seeds and pips in the feed while the animals were out on the pasture. The name lingers on and is now linked to the owner, Retief Goosen, who produces wines from the farm in the Upper-Langkloof valley on the Garden Route of South Africa.
Geese and other water-fowl still visit the farm with its five large dams. They are made more than welcome because of an extensive nature conservation management programme which focuses on the protection and sustainability of this unique eco-system. The Goose Wines are fully committed to the conservation of the area and are full members of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative in South Africa.
This wine is delicious with poultry, fish and creamy pasta.
