Description
The Thistledown Wine Company has sites in the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills. The Thorny Devil 2018 is produced from Old Bush Vines grown in the ebenezer sub region of the Barossa Valley. The two main soil types in the Barossa which are both thought to be relatively low in fertility, are, loam, sand to clay and sandy light-brownish grey to dark grey brown soils. Many of the most famous vineyards have a deep red tinge to the soil colour which contributes to the intensity and deep colouration of many of the wines. The name comes from a small lizard which was found in the vineyard called Thorny Devil.
To maximise fruit purity, the fruit was gently crushed to retain as many whole berries as possible before a cold soak prior to fermentation. Fermentation began naturally and hand plunging twice a day was carried out through to dryness. Gently pressed off skins before 10 months in old oak hogsheads. The result is a beautiful deep red to purple colour with aromas of red cherries and raspberries leading to a medium to full bodied palate with lovely juicy red fruit flavours and silky soft tannins. A depth and elegance leads to a lovely lingering finish.
A perfect match for Game, Lamb, Charcuterie, Blue Cheese, and Spicy Pasta.
