Where to begin with this exceptional wine? Descriptors such as intense red and black fruit, with hints of smoke, minerality, oak and spice really don’t do it justice.
This wine is one of Telmo Rodriguez’s amazing creations from vineyards at least 70 years old. Extremely low yields with tiny berries create a concentrated flavour which is enhanced by being aged in French oak barrels for 19 months.
Rodriguez’s aim is to rediscover the ‘true’ historic taste of Rioja that he believes can only be achieved from the best sites: ‘We respect the capacity of generations of vine growers who observed these places and recognised their value.’ he explains. Rodriguez is a vocal advocate for the potential of Spanish wine, believing it should sit on the table with the best of Burgundy and Bordeaux. ‘Our wines are not made by winemakers, they’re made by grape growers. Once you understand your place, you know how to work.’ he says.
This wine is bottled without filtration so should be decanted and left for at least 90 minutes.
Enjoy this wine with all types of red meat, especially game.
