The Reyneke farm first began in 1863 long before chemicals or technology was available. Originally named Uitzicht which is Dutch for ‘view’, the farm is located on north, east and south facing slopes overlooking Stellenbosch and False Bay. The best land is planted with Vines and the remainder is pasture and wilderness. The farm is biodynamic and therefore is self sustainable producing their own fertilizer and compost. The Reyneke Vineyards and herbicide, pesticide and fungicide free. Instead of spraying weeds they carefully select and grow companion plants amongst the vines to out compete the weeds. These companion plants have the ability to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, help break up compacted soil or even harbour a beneficial insect or two. This philosophy also carries through to the Cellar where no commercially produced yeasts or fermentation aids are used. A non-intervention approach is followed which allows the wine to express its own characteristics and individuality. The Cornerstone has always been an important wine within the Reyneke range, with the proceeds of this wine helping farm workers and their families with education, housing and retirement annuities. At Reyneke we believe that the workers are the cornerstone of the business, which is an integral part of the holistic and biodynamic principles, that Reyneke follows.
The intense sorting process of bunch and berry selection ensures that only the best fruit fermented. The wine is matured for 18 months in French Oak of which 30% are new the remainder being 2nd and e3rd full barriques. The result is deep coloured Bordeaux style with intense aromas of dark fruits, blackcurrant, star anise and thyme. This follows through to the sumptuous palate complemented by well structured tannins and a complex lingering finish.
Perfectly matched with Roast Rack of Lamb, Venison, Mature Cheeses, Roasted Vegetables.
