Description

In 1981 the Gebers family bought a farm covering 71 hectares in the picturesque area between the towns of Somerset West and Stellenbosch, one of the pre-eminent wine regions in South Africa. Situated on a ridge, the winery offers panoramic views of Cape Point, False Bay and the surrounding Helderberg Mountains. The farm was systematically planted with vines, the fruit from which was sold to the local co-operative. It was only in 1996 that a couple of experimental barrels of their own wine were made by Nick Gebers and were an instant hit with the critics. Since then, the winery has been going from strength to strength, producing rich, characterful wines known for both power and finesse.

The homestead had originally operated as the Post Office serving the local community, hence the reason the Winery was named Post House. The postal theme has been taken a step further by naming the wines either after famous stamps or philately terms. The name Red Mercury refers to a major Roman god, Mercury. He is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, travellers, eloquence, luck and trickery. This stamp was printed in 1856 and is the rarest Austrian newspaper postage stamp. A few copies have a rare stamp value of $40 000.

Post House wines are perhaps the darkest coloured wines to be found anywhere. But why? Let’s leave it to the family themselves to explain: ‘The objective is to interfere as little as possible in the creation of the wine making process. We use traditional wine making methods including natural yeast fermentation, basket pressing and no fining or filtering.’

The grapes for this wine were fermented in open tanks using selected and natural yeasts from the vineyard. Malolactic fermentation took place in the tank where the wine had minimal handling. Barrel ageing took place for 12 months to produce this wine which is dark red in colour with a nose of mulberries, redcurrant, black cherry and white pepper. The palate has spicy elements with soft and subtle tannins.

This wine is an ideal accompaniment to red meat and spicy dishes.
