Description
Originally purchased in the late 1800s by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish sea captain and wine connoisseur, the former farmland and orchards now hold some of the region’s most historic wine grapes, as well as a spectacular chateau restored to elegant perfection by the current owners, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola. Inglenook boasts decades of history that spans the Napa Valley wine region. Together with his wife Eleanor, Coppola has spent 40 years restoring Inglenook’s heritage and bringing winemaking operations back to the Chateau. Their 1882 Cabernet first produced in 2012 is dedicated to Gustave Niebaum through the label which features a depiction of this cave-like cellar which he dug into the hillside to mature his wines.
The 1882 is produced from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small amount of Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc added for complexity and balance. Following vinification the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months in Niebaum’s original cellar. The result is a deep ruby full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with luscious aromas of cherries, blackberries and some hints of cedar. The palate displays dark fruit character supported by lovely refined tannins and a very long finish with notes of chocolate and vanilla.
Perfect to accompany slow cooked Lamb, Grilled Steak, Game and Mature Blue Cheeses.
