Description
The luscious red and black fruits and cherry aromas and flavours from Syrah grapes are tempered by the floral character of the small amount of Viognier grapes in this excellent wine from Côte Rôtie. Hints of pepper and green olive add an extra dimension, enhancing the supple tannins.
Bassenon takes its name from the creek located at the bottom of the Semons hillside (in the commune of Tupin-Semons) where the Syrah and Viognier grapes which comprise this cuvée are cultivated. The two varieties are both cultivated by hand in an environmentally friendly way. The grapes are harvested by hand fermented in barrels using native yeasts and then matured for 18months also in oak barrels to further intensify the flavours.
In the space of a decade, Yves Cuilleron has established himself as one of the leading lights of France’s Northern Rhône region. He’s a modernist, but not overly so: his wines neatly straddle the divide between traditionalists and the avant-garde innovators.
This wine can be served with all types of classic meat dishes including roasted, braised and grilled pork, beef, lamb, game and poultry.
