Description

Owned by the Famille De Schepper and consisting of a single block of vines at an altitude of 100 metres in Saint-Laurent-des Combes, the vineyard of Chateau Tour Baladoz overlooks the Crus classés of Châteaux Pavie, Bellefont Belcier and Larcisse Ducasse to the south, bordering Château Tertre Roteboeuf to the east and Troplong Mondot to the west. The vines for are partially on the limestone plateau and partially on clay. An ancient estate, high-quality terroir, and winemaking expertise from the vine to the bottle ensure the fine reputation of wines produced at Château Tour Baladoz, not least this quintessential Saint-Émilion.

St Emilion Grand Cru is vinified at low temperatures to preserve the delicate fruit aromas, making alcoholic fermentation slow but regular. Maceration lasts for three to five weeks, giving a richly coloured wine, before the wine is racked and transferred to temperature-controlled tanks for malolactic fermentation. Three to four months later, the wine is transferred to oak barrels, 50% of which are new and 50% of which have only been used for one or two years. The wine is then left to mature in barrel for 12-15 months according to the vintage before the final blending.

The predominance of Merlot accounts for the wine’s dark colour and fruit flavours of red berries and plums underpinned by oak, spice and leather. The wine has a beautiful tannic structure adding to the long finish.
